Dancers wtih DayJobs
debut at the Atlantic Fringe Festival
thirtySomething Dance Co-op is Halifax's newest dance company
and plans to make its debut at the Atlantic Fringe Festival in September.
The show, "Dancers with Day Jobs," will feature fourteen
adult dancers performing professionally choreographed numbers in
jazz, tap, swing and salsa styles. Local Halifax choreographers
Kym Butler and Jenee Gowing will be premiering new works with the
tSdc for the show. Other new pieces in the show will be choreographed
by the members of the co-operative.
This public performance of thirtySomething Dance Co-op
celebrates the varied abilities and perspectives that its members
bring to dance, but two things each performer has in common are
that dance is a part-time hobby and a full-blown passion.
"There's no expiration date for the craving these
"dancer-junkies" have," says Kate Hayter-Reid, one
of tSdc's co-founders. "They need dance in their lives."
Reid, a photographer, together with Robert Aitkens, a business advisor,
conceived the tSdc in January of 2004. "Once Robert and I floated
the idea of a dance company for "grown-ups," we knew we
weren't alone in our craving," say Reid. "Everyone we
asked to join needed little or no time to think about it. They just
jumped on board."
According to Reid, the courage required to found a dance
company is being fueled by the excellent training tSdc members receive
at the hands and feet, of adult-friendly dance teachers such as
Butler and Gowing.
